High School in the former Transkei begins at grade 10. This is apparently(and this is a very big “apparently”) soon to change. The current system sucks because high school teachers only have two and a half years to prepare learners for grade 12 exams and life beyond.
What should be a three year gig becomes a marathon session for many who during their stay in high school manage to spawn a kid or two if Aids doesn’t put an abrupt end to the race to Nowhereland. A disturbing number of grade 10’s is old enough to drink, hold a job or join the circuis.
