Once close ally to President Jacob Zuma, former ANC Youth League president Julius Malema has now apologised to the ANC and asked to be allowed to return to the party. This came after he was expelled from the ANC for sowing divisions and bringing the party into disrepute.
“I want to also apologise to the leadership of the ANC for anything that they think I have done wrong” he said during a televised interview.
He went on to say that he had not done it deliberately, he was making a contribution…
First of all, his apology sounded insincere and forced, the very fact that he says “for anything that they think I have done wrong”. This means he still does not accept that he did anything wrong.
Secondly, Julius Malema is a grown up with a fully functioning brain that can differentiate between right and wrong, so he was very much aware of all his utterances and knew the reason behind them. He is an intelligent man, otherwise he wouldn’t have been who he is today if that wasn’t the case, he just has a knack for putting his foot in his mouth. Even when he has a valid point to make, he chooses to be controversial when emphasising that point. He managed to dodge the bullet on so many occasions for his controversial remarks that he may have believed that he was invincible.
Many people were wondering why it took so long for the ANC to put Malema on a leash but it was obvious why; he was being protected by President Zuma, the man Malema helped in ousting former president Thabo Mbeki and secured the presidency for himself (Zuma).
Countless court cases have been filed against Malema, he has made many headlines in the media and at times has been subject to ridicule but he has always managed to come back stronger than ever. So following his expulsion, his political future seems uncertain, does he have more tricks up his sleeve? Can he redeem himself?
